Science World is a Vancouver landmark. When planning an extensive renovation, Science World decided to upgrade their security system to one appropriate for an establishment that stands as a symbol of technological progress.

Project Overview:

In 2010, construction commenced with the expansion and renovation of the existing Science World building. Together with Citiloc, security challenges were identified via an assessment of traffic flow patterns, potential infringement areas, and staff access requirements. The complete security system upgrade involved installing new and retrofitting existing hardware to enable installation of access control and alarm intrusion for the staff, volunteers, and guests to the building facilities.

An extensive collection of mechanical keys was replaced by an automated internal and external access control system. Science World chose ICT (Integrated Control Technologies) – a hardwired and networked system of card readers and electronic locks – to allow greater control of the overall facility. Fully integrated with the alarm system, the proximity access control readers and electronic locks monitor and record all movement through the facility, sending information to a central computer room via a secure network. Each access card is programmed to meet the holder’s specific requirements and can be easily deactivated when an individual leaves the organization.

Citiloc took ownership over the entire security installation, providing Science World with the convenience of having “one call” service in the case of an emergency. The system was designed to be scalable; enabling Science World to upgrade or expand their security infrastructure as required by the needs of their evolving facility.
